Hike to No Where

Every year for the past five or six years we have made a pilgrimage to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park and I didn't want this year to be an exception.

How my backpacking life started

The weekend of May 13, 2004, My cell phone rang. I answered it to my husband asking “What’cha doing this weekend?”

Backpacking with the family.

Ten years after my first backpacking trip, we are getting ready for our first outing of our 2014 season, heading to the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve for the long holiday weekend in January.!

A Letter From Karen About
Life's Pilgrims

By Karen Anderson

In my life, I have come to my own philosophy:

There are two types of people in the world, those who sit back and read about what others are doing and those who are doing what others are reading about.

My husband and I chose to be a part of the latter group. He is an Eagle Scout and we raised our boys in the scouting program, which allowed us to experience some wonderful opportunities to learn, explore and teach others. These experiences covered everything from basic camping and hiking, high adventure camping and backpacking, photography, shooting sports, kayaking, canoeing, amateur radio and more. This led us to become what I would best describe by the old adage, "jacks of all trades masters of none".

During our time in the outdoors we have taught people who have never camped before how easy it is to get out and enjoy the wonders of nature. We are not always the experts, but we wish to continue to share what we do know with others.

Life is a journey and we are all pilgrims travelling its varied paths.

Twenty three years later, both our boys are now Eagle Scouts and we find ourselves at the next crossroad in our lives. There are so many paths that we can follow but the sense of adventure, with the years of accumulated knowledge and experience still beckons to us.

Our playground of choice is our own backyard, sunny Florida where we live. There is so much more to this state than just the beaches and warm oceans. We have the Everglades, dry marshes, prairies, and fresh water springs that all lend to an outdoorsman's paradise throughout the year. Some of our favorite areas to visit, outside of Florida, are the Appalachian, Blue Ridge, and Smoky Mountains.

We invite you to join us as we continue our own pilgrimage of knowledge and adventures.
